Raccoon Tale

A 4-month long game project

A charming 2D puzzle platformer made in Unity featuring an adorable raccoon and its journey through the human environments on its quest to reach the forest. Using stealth, wits and skill, the player must traverse dangerous places by studying the environment and learning from their mistakes. This was the first game I've made in Unity.

My role in a team of 5

As well as a team lead who presented the game to executives each week and relayed feedback and delegated tasks to my team, I was the lead programmer, UI artist & implementer and SFX programmer. I coded elements such as the respawning, map switching, all menus, stealth mechanics, collectibles, both boss fights and more. I also was a big part of the game design, having regular brainstorming sessions with my team and helping them realise their best ideas. The journey to final submission could not have been made without my wonderful team though: we had two fantastic artists, a game design wizard and another helpful programmer who joined us later in the project to help rework the character controller.

Post-mortem

Looking back on ways to improve on the game, there are a few things I would change. I would have added a volume slider for SFX and music instead of just toggle, as WebGL (the main platform the game is played on) doesn't offer any volume control to the players and you can’t expect someone to lower the volume of their whole browser and/or their computer just for the game. To better communicate to the player that they are hidden from enemies, I would've added a Skyrim-esque eye icon when you are hidden behind objects. I maybe would've also added a way to save the game, as the game takes about 30 minutes to complete, and it would be a shame to have to start over if the player quits the game and comes back later.
